Currently troop donation is the only metric really recognized in alliances - in the sense that you can rank members by their troops donated and can see their lifetime donations. A lot of alliances use this metric to determine member value and distribute ranks, etc.
This is annoying as it ignores two other major areas - response to speed up assistance requests and parliament research donations.
I think it would be far better if a total contribution score was calculated, which factors in all contributions - research, speed up response and donations - so that the member list could then show 'lifetime contribution' and members could be ordered that way.
It would provide more recognition for those who spend on assisting speed ups and research and would just overall be a fairer way to display contribution.
(If implemented, it would be great if it were implemented to factor in retroactive contributions if that's possible).
