Spam flooding the forum

Admin/Mods, are you able to restrict how much someone new to the forum can post so the spam bots don't keep flooding the forum? Otherwise, maybe there are security measures you could implement when they try to join?

I know bots are a problem on all sites but it has been particularly bad here lately.

Proposals for measures:
- Limit for new topics per account per hour or day
- Limit to ASCII characters (additional positive effect: many foreign languages are blocked and thus the forum rules are enforced)
- non-transparent word filters (as in the game) that completely discard messages if they contain an prohibited string.

Been in contact with the folks that have the keys. We've already implemented numerous filtering options, and I'm not a fan of starting my day with cleaning up the bots either. I'm hoping we can get some movement on this.
