Mortars do not defend themselves!!!

So I have been using mortars for a while now as they are the only effective troop, but they get killed very easy, but the issue is that when they are being attacked they wouldn't fight back and simply be killed,

I truly have a full list of issues but this is just getting to me,

Another thing. About all the discussions about offence vs defence, IMO as both a defencive player and offencive, (I'm at level 421 with all defend maxed at done) I must say that offence has become almost impossible at my level, I have spent over 15k on this game, but now I'm slowly playing less and less, defence has gotten so much more stronger over the past year, and offence hasn't seen anything close to that

Isn't this a contradiction? How effective can they be if they get killed easily? The problem is their ineffectively slow rate of fire.
Imo there are other more effective troops at both dealing damage and defending themselves.
