Renaissance Warfare encapsulates the beginning of the European Renaissance into the late 18th century. The Renaissance was defined by the advancement of military technology, and the increasing scale of warfare. The development of gunpowder was of particular importance. Gunpowder led to the creation of firearms and explosives that would be used throughout the era. The use of cavalry in battle expanded, creating the need for new weapons and countermeasures to defend against it. Army sizes grew greatly during the period leading to wars greater and more devastating than ever before. Countries like France went from fielding armies in the tens of thousands in the 1550s to mobilizing forces of over half a million by 1700. The combination of technological advancement along with the growing scale of war led to an increasing number of injuries and fatalities on the battlefield.
