Petrov’s Decision Event 9/8 - 9/15
This week is our Petrov's Decision Event!
On September 26, 1983, the Soviet satellite monitoring base Serpukhov-15 received a signal that the United States had fired five missiles. Knowing that the new satellite systems were prone to false alarms, Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov reported it as such, figuring the U.S. would have launched hundreds of missiles if the attack had been real. It turned out that a satellite had misinterpreted reflections of sunlight near Montana as missiles. For his quick thinking, Petrov was later honored with several humanitarian awards.

Temple of Artemis Event 9/9 - 9/23
Quickly build and expand your city during the Temple of Artemis event!
The people of Ephesus understood Artemis differently than other Greeks. Perhaps because her local cult predated the foundation of the Greek city, they believed she was born nearby rather than on the island of Delos. They also assigned her traits of the indigenous Anatolian mother goddess. ‘Artemis Ephesia’ looks quite alien next to the idealized forms of mainland Greek sculpture.
A succession of temples were built to venerate this unique goddess. The fabled riches of king Croesus of Lydia funded the first truly grand Artemision in the sixth century BCE. Each one was destroyed by some man-made or natural catastrophe and then rebuilt by the wealthy city. Only the advent of Christianity finally ended the cycle, with the temple’s permanent destruction coming at the hands of a religious mob in 401 CE.
Though superficially similar to other Greek temples, the Artemision stood out for its beauty and immensity. It was believed to be the first building constructed entirely out of marble. Fine artworks filled its colonnades, and its area measured four times that of the Parthenon. Indeed, many ancient writers who had seen the Seven Wonders ranked the Temple of Artemis as the greatest by far.

Hannibal Barca was a Carthaginian general who lived during the Punic Wars in the second and third centuries BCE. Mononymously known as Hannibal, he was born into a military family and made to swear eternal hatred for Rome, Carthage's greatest enemy. Hannibal was victorious in numerous battles during the Second Punic War, including the Battle of Trebia, the Battle of Lake Trasimene, and the Battle of Cannae. Hannibal was truly 'The Ultimate Tactician' when he utilized the double envelopment military maneuver during the Battle of Cannae by attacking both sides of the Roman formation that had been attacking Hannibal's forces directly.
