I can recommend reading the sticky guide, that's in this section of the forum. It all depends what kind of player you are... My self is an offensive player, that choose the Romans because of the army size.. And so far im happy with them.

Hello Mischief. This game really allows you to talor your own identity much more than other games that are like it. The trouble with answering your question is that each civilization has its own useful traits. This may make it seem like you can develop quick and easy answers but you can't. The game also features wonders which can dramatically change the dynamics of your nation. Unique units do the same thing. I chose the Greeks. They may not appear to be a strong offensive nation and maybe even an attractive target but my strategy I cobbled together is to use wonders that are defensive, such as the Acropolys to discourage attacks, use food and gold quickly so there is little to take (because being attacked and losing is inevitable) and attack a LOT, especially during the Iron age because the Greeks feature an extremely potent unique unit with The Companion. Other suggestions in a start like this is, up grading defenses should either be top priority or close to it and don't up grade your town center until you have maxed your up grades. Also, think long haul. The Greeks unique unit has certainly been a benefit to me, but I suspected it won't be as useful in later ages, so it was only a small part of my long-term thinking. In the end, I am also very new to this game, so if anyone believes I have spoken in error, I am open to correction and suggestion

From my personal understanding of each of the nations i believe it comes down to thinking about long term to decide which is the best nation. In my opinion Romans are the best nation.

British: Give more loot which is great at first and will probably help you upgrade fast and get to max faster then other nations but once you have reached that state then this nation will become useless since you won't really worry about looting rather than getting medals.

Chinese: Give extra Citizen and better defense. The extra citizen is great for growing quicker and getting to that max base faster but once again that citizen will become useless when you reach that stage and it won't be of much use to you. The defense is good however in most games like this you have to have a great offense not defense. Thinking about it a time when you are maxed out and going to try to be the best player by getting the most medals will tell you that if you were to get attacked and lose a few medals and get back online and do 3 attacks you could probably make up all the medals you lost. So Offense is BETTER then defense when you are at that stage.

French: Grow army faster: This is not a bad nation but it is not that great either since it will give you no offensive upgrade just give you the ability to attack more often. This is the nation for people who will be extremely active and need to have their armies prepared quickly.

Germans: Quicker rally. This is one of the better nations that you want to decide between. The ability to be able to use rally more often is critical during attacks because you will be able to control your armies more efficiently controlling them to attack certain things before attacking other. For example, you will be able to get them to eliminate defenses faster due to the faster rally.]

Greeks: Upgrage quicker and cheaper. This nation is similar to the british where it will help you to be maxed quicker and faster then the other nations but once you reach that point the nation will become quite useless.

Japanese: Mighty defense is very similar to chinese where they boast their defensive skills. But as i mentioned earlier the best method to be the top is through offense not defense.

Romans: Increase Army size: in my opinion is the best nation once you have reached the max state since you will be able to attack better and stronger with more troops in your armies and get more medals for you. Even thinking short term the increased armies might cost a little extra to make but the amount of loot that you will be able to steal with a few extra troops is enormous.

Therefore i believe the romans are the best nation with the germans at a close second and the french at third place. Deciding the nation should be considered whether you are thinking short term or long term. If you want the benefits fast and short term my advice would be to go with the greeks. If you are thinking of going long term then you should choose the romans.
Just my 2 cents

Cool. A discussion maybe. =} Skillz, I disagree with your assessment of the Greeks. The developers are going to consistently release new features in the form of buildings to this game. Being at the top of the tech tree with the Greeks could mean that you will be amongst the first to receive the benefit of new releases

I agree that they are going to always be releasing new upgrades, building, space for bigger kingdoms and the greek benefit would help a lot to upgrade as soon as possible and achieve the max state. But thinking in the long term there will come a time when you are maxed and the developers are still working on new upgrades. During that time period the benefit of the greeks is not really that great.
Also when you are at a point where you have maxed everything and the developers release newer upgrades or buildings the amount of the greeks are saving is only 10 minutes per upgrade and that would not make up for the ability to have bigger armies which will get you to be stronger and get the loot faster in order to upgrade faster. So in essence in can be said that since other nations acquire loot faster the 10 minutes does not really achieve anything. Although the greeks have the ability to make upgrades cheaper which is a great benefit of the greeks. However once again this will not help once you have maxed everything and are trying to be the best of the game and there are people who are raiding you with bigger armies or faster rallies.
Just my opinion anyway. I could very well be wrong damascus. I am just a beginner and only seeing the end with just an idea of the abilities, honestly i can't say for certain which will be best for you. Which is why i stated all the nation benefits of all of em and my opinions of all of em.

To moderators or admins
I think you should copy and paste or somehow send this thread into the sticky you guys have on picking the right nation. I think it could help a lot of people decide and understand more clearly. Also people can discuss their own opinions on each nation and we could receive different perspectives from different people on each nation.
I think it would be extremely helpful
Just my 2 cents

The advantage of being at the top of the building and tech tree is an advantage of its own. This will have long term benefits. Now, you mentioned a mere 10 minute advantage when the Greeks will spend less and gain more time on new releases. I don't believe you are correct though. These buildings are going to get more and more expensive and take longer and longer to construct every time the developers put out a new release. So, I would argue that the long term benefit of the Greeks will always increase. You said you are thinking about when you get to the top of the food chain, the Greeks might be at a disadvantage because of other nations abilities. I would remind you that first you must get there and there are many that have are ahead of us. I had already chosen the Greeks. I am just sharing a different point of view on them. =) Maybe a month or two from now I will change mind

Damascus i think you do have a point that the greeks are good but as i understood the benefits of of the greeks are just to make building cheaper and faster to upgrade by 10 minutes at the end. So instead of waiting to upgrade for free at 5 minutes greeks can do it at 15 minutes for free. But when you consider long term the amount of loot is never concerning because when you are at the end point of the game you will always have enough loot and your main concern will be with getting medals. This in no way will help you to get medals. Also if it is about time, i honestly believe that having my army increased by 10% will get me the loot necessary for my more expensive upgrade 10x faster then other nations because i am good at looting. Whethere there are people ahead of us or not does not matter since that will be true for every nation no matter which you pick. Also no matter which nation you pick you will always be able to achieve the max state at which point you will be trying to get medals. But to each his own. Please do let me know your thoughts on the greeks as you advance, I would like to know more about it and i will post stuff about romans as i progress.

I picked the French because of the quickened troop training. However I'm noticing that it's hardly making a difference when I compare it to my alliance members. In fact when a friend and I queued troops at the same time (he has Greece btw) it took an identical amount or time! So I'm starting to think I made a mistake and should have just picked Rome. Those huge armies would make all the difference against the well defended bases I'm attacking now.

What I like about Rome, is that it doesn't matter what stage of the game you are on, you will always enjoy the benefit, Greeks for example, may be ahead whenever they release something, but a few hours later everyone else will catch up, and then they will be the only ones without an actual benefit. 10% of army is a major bonus in my opinion, this kind of games are also very offensive, so what better than having an offensive advantage? :)

In my opinion,
Roman and Japan are both equally powerful nations.

Romans are a 100% "SPARTAN" Offensive nation.

Nation Power: Increase troop capacity
Special Unit: Legion - Tanky soldiers that can withstand damage (catapult won't hurt these guys much).

Japanese are more balance with 50% defence and 50% offence.

Nations Power: MIGHTY DEFENCE - Peace Treaty last longer after defeat and Town Centre can attack incoming enemies.
Special Unit: Bushi (Samurai) - Deals a lot more damage than other soldiers, very effective at tearing down buildings and defences

Legion = Health +
Samurai = Damage +

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9hngG79oj0 This video should really answer your question Mischief. Although you already chose Roman. :)

imo pvp ranking is end game. and having a city that produces the best offense is top priority. defense being #2 and resource production distant 3rd. that being the case for me the top civilizations are. french beat out romans because faster army rebuilding means more battles. if a regular civilization builds an army in 15 minutes and the french do it in 13 minutes. and the romans with their bigger army do it in 18 minutes then the french are gonna farm pvp rank faster. romans will be able to take on slightly tougher opponents. but for pvp farming you have some leeway in picking opponents. so imo id take faster army building over stronger army i have a hunch that french cavalry will be a better unique unit than roman legionaires

when building upgrades take more than 1 day 10 minutes is nothing. and that wont increase as the game gets more upgrades.

You're thinking the wrong way, take you're time and read about what im going to tell you now.
I chose the Roman nation and honestly i wish i chose the brittish. Sure the romans may be nice but the 10% extra troop isnt that great i've noticed that you get 1 extra troop space per barrack upgrade and i thought it would be more, and not only that you will mostly use the legions and what i've noticed is that when you attack with that huge army the catapults hurts the army alot because of having so many troops together, and if you spread them out its gonna take even more time to kill the defensive buildings which will give the defender more time to spawn more troops to defend. Spreading them out also makes it easier for the towers to take them down. The catapults may not do much damage but it does enough for the other defensive objects to take care of army that will have half the health left. And upgrading the legions after classical age sucked, the extra health they got from the upgrade wasnt much and didnt help at all when i attacked a gun powder age nation, my troop actually got whiped fast.

The japanese are great offensive nation as well, hell everytime they attack me they whipe out my base extremly fast, that nation is actually great. I wouldve rather choosen them then the romans cause it would benefit alot in enlighment age from what i think.

The Germans are awesome too, they as well whipes my base right away cause of the damage they do and with the shorter rally time cool down makes it easier for them not to loose that much troops while raiding and trust me the germans are good!.

Now the reason why i would personally choose the Brittish is because they fit my playstyle, sure the archers are weak in the begining but you need to look at it from a different angle.
The brittish archers has a nice range to shoot down everything in their way which is actually awesome but they have a extremly hard time killing all the buildings, now as you all know you get more troop space in time by upgrading the barracks, so in time you will have enough troop space to build troops that can kill thoose buildings while the archers are "protecting" them from the defensive troops, not only that you also get troops donated from your alliances and u mostly get foot troops.
So yeah in time i think that the Germans and Brittish nations will be the ones that people will complain about later in game.

I personally regret choosing rome and building that amount army will frustrate you because of the amount of time it will take to build them all, rome is good tho but they are defenitly not the best.

I hope this helped all the new players, and dont do the same mistake i did, read the forums gain knowledge and dont forget that this game will keep evolving to space time.

Talking about the real "end game", let's say the battle for the world top 1, just like clash of clans, people simply just buy their army out, so the build time is instant. It's all just about the combination of army type and strategy. Now, we can't overlook the power of the special unit, if you really compare the stats the special unit are indeed quite strong. So I'm not sure if a special "foot man" is better than a special "horse man" or "bow man", but the army size will always be helpful. Having said that, I still believe in this game tactics are more important than army size and kind, that's why the "best general" I believe most likely come out of Germans. A successful Rally can avoid heavy AOE dmg and take down priority target which can avoid massive casualties, the only question is: are we that good a strategist in our battle command? So I would argue is it German or Roman be the strongest offensive Nation.

i didnt realize people spent so much money on this game that buying the rebuild of ur army makes sense. to each their own. so i guess wed have to break it up into free play and gem play. for free play with my limited experience i prefer french faster army build instead of roman bigger army(which also takes extra time to build). the biggest unknown to me is unique units. are french cav better than roman legions? im confident i prefer british/japanese archers over french cav
