I want the unique characteristics of each country to be emphasized more.
Rome should have Caesar, China should have Guan Yu, Germany should have Frederick II, and France should have Louis XIV.
I wish they would add heroes that can be used only by that specific country.
Not something like Ripley or anything like that…

Omg I was about to say the exact same thing!!! Instead of Ripley, I was thinking either more customizable but unique units like a royal guard or knight who you can customize and rename, but make them country-specific so maybe the British have the queens guard and the french have the old guard, orrrrrr as you said, commanders based on real historic figures..
Some of my ideas
British: Richard the Lionheart, Robert the Bruce, Arthur Wellesley, Winston Churchill, etc.
Chinese: Lü Bu, Genghis Khan, Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zedong, etc.
French: Joan of Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte, Charles de Gaulle, etc.
Germans: Arminius, Odoacer, Frederick the Great, Erwin Rommel (?), etc.
Greeks: Leonidas, Alexander the Great, Justinian the Great, etc.
Japanese: Ieyasu Tokugawa, etc.
Koreans: idk
Romans: Romulus, Scipio Africanus, Julius Caesar, Augustus, etc.
